Stellenbosch Hills is an established player on the South African wine scene, celebrating more than 70 years of winemaking excellence and industry experience. It is widely accepted that the first farming activities, which includes grape growing, started in 1707 in the current Stellenbosch Hills area. At Stellenbosch Hills we are proud of our rich history and heritage, and dedicated to the task of continuing to make affordable, internationally celebrated wines. Launched in 2008, this community project aims to improve the lives of the local Vlottenburg community, more specific, the Vlottenburg Primary School. The school has approximately 400 learners, which includes most of our vineyard and winery employees’ younger children! As is the case with most local government schools, there are limited funds available for teaching aids, which would greatly enhance these children’s educational experience. This is our ongoing outreach programme to enhance the children’s educational experience. Our grapes are sourced from various vineyards owned and maintained by 16 different producers from farms surrounding the town of Stellenbosch. This world famous wine-producing region is known for the diversity of its rich agricultural soils and its moderate, Mediterranean-style climate, making it the perfect place to grow grapes to create the award winning wines we are famous for. Stellenbosch itself represents excellent conditions and terroir for grape-growing: Stellenbosch lies at the foot of the Cape Fold mountain range, which provides soil favourable to viticulture. PG Slabbert has been the cellar master at Stellenbosch Hills since 2003 and has over the years celebrated numerous proud moments and success. When asked where his passion for winemaking began PG says growing up on his family-owned farm in Northern Cape it was only natural he’d follow a career in agriculture but decided to exchange the red Kalahari dunes for an oasis of green vines and excellent wines. He completed his winemaking degree at Stellenbosch University in 1995 after which he started his career at KWV and joined Stellenbosch Hills (then Vlottenburg) in He enjoys every part of the wine industry from the vine, to the winemaking and marketing. To summarize his passion PG says it’s the uniqueness of wine that most interest him. James joined the Stellenbosch Hills team as winemaker after working harvests in Marlborough in New Zealand and the Napa Valley in California, as well as working as assistant red winemaker at Zonnebloem, Distell, for the past three years.
