It is perhaps best known as being home to Stellenbosch University. However, it is the second oldest town in South Africa and was founded 1679 when this name was given to a small island on the Eerste River (First River). It has been historically preserved and has many beautiful examples of historical architecture. After its discovery by settlers moving out from Cape Town, Stellenbosch was quickly identified as an area in which to settle. The surrounding areas had rich soil, water and a good climate for producing vegetables to sell to the ships passing by the Cape of Good Hope. The settlers also loved good wine and soon Stellenbosch became surrounded by vineyards. The wine-producing industry grew from strength to strength and Stellenbosch soon became world famous for its amazing wines. To this day, wine from Stellenbosch and its surrounds is sold all over the world. In 1971, Stellenbosch became the first wine region in South Africa to establish a wine route. This is formed by an organised network of wineries that can be visited for wine tastings, food and admiring the buildings and surrounding countryside. Because of the rich agricultural and wine industry in the area, the early settlers soon established a bustling town. The earliest building can still be viewed on the historic wine farm of Muratie and dates back to In the historic town itself, white-plastered buildings were built and oak trees were planted. The name Eikestad (Town of Oaks) is still used to describe the town today. In 1918, the University of Stellenbosch was founded. It is still an internationally recognised centre of education and is one of the leading universities on the African continent. The university attracts scholars from around the world and every year students boost the town’s population.
